I Am Legend | An analysis When you are the last of the species reaching out for help, looking for someone that does not live a nocturnal existence, you need to have faith in God. The novel version of I Am Legend is better then the motion picture because the information slowly leaks out about Nevilles past, present, and specifics about the vampires. Robert Neville is a scientist who is unable to stop the spread of the horrifying virus that is fatal, incurable, and man-made. For three years, Robert has sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivor who might be out there. Robert obtains books and other research materials to discover the cure of the disease which is a strain of bacteria capable of infecting both deceased and living hosts. The virus has mutated everyone except one survivor which is Robert Neville. Robert is confused about his faith in God due to the situations he had to face. The characters usually depend on one another because it defines their true character in the end. Robert is trying to find the specifics about the vampires, so he can find a cure A virus can be spread really fast from one person to another. Robert Neville might be the only survivor of an incurable plague that has mutated everyone into bloodthirsty creatures who are determined to destroy him. There is always a solution to a conflict in which Robert believes he can find a resolution. Robert is trying to find a cure for the virus that has infected everyone in the world. The novel describes the situation that Robert is facing is very risky and in the motion picture it seems as if his everyday life is not too bad. His everyday target is to be back home before sunset. Usually there are a lot of difficulties that people face to find an explanation to a problem. Robert came up with a plan to capture a vampire because he wants to try different experiments to find the cure. Generally to accomplish a goal there is always some problem that interferes but never give up too fast. Robert accomp lished to trap an infected woman but the other vampires watched his every step and played the same trick on him. The novel didnt have much detail on how Robert trapped the vampire but the motion picture demonstrates the pain and the risk he had to go through. Robert put his life in danger, knowing the consequences. Putting in all the effort and not giving up is the first step to success. Robert was doing an experiment on the infected women and it slowly began to show good results. Working to the best of someones ability always receives an award at the end. The therapy Robert gave to the woman who is infected by the virus, slowly started to work. The motion picture has a very intense situation because Robert wants to help all the other vampires who have been infected but none of them are ready to listen to him. The novel shows Robert as the only survivor left of his own race. Robert didnt give up and took every step very carefully, which helped him achieve his goal. People believe in God but the terrible situations that they face are because of their own mistakes. Robert thinks the problem that he is going through is because of people being lazy and not taking a serious action right away. Most people believe that people impose disasters on themselves. Robert believes in God and also believes that the circumstances every one is going through is because of their blunder. The novel doesnt clearly state about Robert believing in God but in the movie it displays an clear image of Robert believing in God. Depending on someone too much is not good because when he/she lets the person down, it really hurts. Neville is depending on Ruth because she can help him out of jail. Sometimes people face problems that they shouldnt be punished for and dealing with it patiently is the best way. After a few years of loneliness and fear in a civilization devoid of civilized people, Robert struggled with his beliefs. Robert slowly started to loose his faith because fo r three years he has been trying his best to find a cure but its doing him no good. In the novel Robert is in prison and the only person who can get him out is Ruth. Usually people just accept their faith and try to live it happily. Robert accepts his faith and tearfully asks Ruth not to let this society get too ruthless. It is hard to count on someone who has let you down or tests a persons patience more than they should. A woman named Anna saves Robert from an accident and claims God guided her to find him just in time. In the movie it shows that it is hard for Robert to forget all the nasty problems that he had to face all by himself and in the novel he just accepts his faith because whatever he tried was no good. At first many people think God doesnt resist but the problems that people deal with, slowly realize that he is always there for everyone. To find out more about a character there is always more than one person in a novel or a movie. Not knowing anyone can make a persons life miserable. Robert is trying to find a cure without anyones help and he believes he will accomplish in his task. Listening to someone who a person does not know too much about can sometimes be very dangerous. Roberts neighbor Ben Cortman is always yelling Roberts name during the evening, trying to convince him to come out just so he can harm him. The movie shows Robert in a high degree of loneliness because everyone around him is trying to destroy him but in the novel Robert has his wife and daughter with him with some time and then he is all by himself trying to find a cure for the virus. When a person is stuck in a situation that no one can help him/her out with, the best thing to do is have faith in God. Robert is in jail and the only person who can help him out is Ruth. When a person is saved from a big problem, he/ she has done good deeds. Robe rt had a huge accident but Anna saved his life due to the radio messages Robert sent out. The novel and movie both show that when Robert needed the most help, someone is there for him because he has a good intention and he has waited patiently to find a cure to the virus. There is always more then one character in a story because thats the only way to find out more about the character itself. Overall I think the novel is better than the movie because the author slowly leaks out the information. Robert Neville found out the cure all by himself and had to deal with very difficult problem, he is the only survivor. Robert sent out radio messages for three years desperate to find another survivor but he lost his faith in God because he patiently waited for a few years and whatever step he took would end up being difficult and bad for him. It is hard to know about a character who does not depend on one another. Therefore Robert is a legend because he found the cure to the virus and all the problems he went through, he didnt give up. To achieve something in life keep trying and never give up because at the end it is always worth it.

Introduction Emily Harris is the Vice president of New Heritage Doll Company’s production division. In mid-September of 2010 she was trying to decide on project proposals for the company’s capital budget meeting in October. Of the proposals presented to her, two of them stood out based on their innovation and ability to strengthen the division’s product lines. The first project, Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansion (MMDC), would extend the warm weather products to an all-weather clothing line. The second project, Design your Own Doll (DYOD), would start with a website where customers would choose the doll’s features, color, etc. and then the dolls will be made to order. The firm could decline both of the proposals because of managerial and financial resource constraints. Other divisions in the company are also expected to promote projects of their own. Because of these factors Harris has to choose to promote one of her division’s projects over the other. Set forth and compare the business cases for each of the two projections under consideration by Emily Harris. Which do you regard as more compelling? The Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project involves expanding the existing successful Match My Doll Clothing line. This clothing line originally consisted of a few sets of matching doll and child clothing for warm weather. Given its current success, there is a consideration to expand it to include all season clothing line. Since it is an expansion to existing product line, investment in operating capital, pricing structure and product cost can be based on historical information. The company should be able to use current sales channels like selling to retail divisions or private labels. New Heritage should be able to outsource manufacturing of this product line expansion to Asia, similar to other existing products. The Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) Project involves creation of new customized dolls to customer’s specification. This project will require new web-based doll-design software. Due to lead time constraints, the company will have to consider manufacturing this made-to-order product line in-house or outsource it to contract manufacturers in USA instead of Asia. This would be a new manufacturing channel for the company. Product cost is expected to be high due to low volume and customized set up. New Heritage Doll Company will have to be thorough when they calculate product cost and price structures for this new product line. This new product will probably be sold through on-line channels only. We assumed that the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project is a medium risk project since it is an extension to existing successful product line so we used risk-adjusted cost of capital of 8.4%. We believe that project 2 (DYOD) is a much higher risk project since it is a completely new product line for the company and requires an information technology component, so we used risk-adjusted cost of capital of 9%. According to Exhibit 1, the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project has a Net Present Value (NPV) of $7,150 and Exhibit 2 shows that the Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) Project has a Net Present Value (NPV) of $7,058. Both projects have positive NPV and would create value for the company. However, the Match My Doll Clothing Line Expansions (MMDC) Project has a slightly higher NPV so it would create more value for the company . 3. Compute the internal rate of return (IRR) and payback period for each project. How should these metrics affect Harris’s deliberations? How do they compare to NPV as tools for evaluating projects? When and how would you use each? The internal rate of return (IRR) for the Match My Doll Clothing Line  Expansions (MMDC) is 24.0% based on the NPV calculated above ($7,150). The IRR for the Design Your Own Doll (DYOD) project is 17.9% based on the NPV calculated above ($7058). The calculated IRRs of the two projects do not eliminate either from consideration. Both projects IRR’s are above their individually assigned discount rates, 8.4% for MMDC and the higher (riskier) 9.0% for DYOD. The MMDC Project has an IRR=24%, MIRR=21%, payback of 7.4 years and discounted payback of 9.1 years. The DYOD Project has IRR=17.9%, MIRR=16.4%, payback of 9.1 years and discounted payback of 9.4 years. The MMDC Project has a higher NPV and better internal rate of returns (both IRR and MIRR) than DYOD Project. The MMDC Project has a shorter payback and discounted payback period than DYOD Project. So based on financial analysis, the MMDC Project is more attractive than DYOD Project. The DYOD Project is more capital intensive and even though it might potentially generate higher revenues, it would take longer to generate free cash flow. The NPV is lower for the DYOD Project in this case because it uses higher risk-adjusted cost of capital than the MMDC Project. One point to mention is that the payback period is less sophisticated than IRR or NPV. The payback period looks at the cash flows and determines when the money paid out will be recovered by the benefits of a project. The payback period looks at a project only until the costs have been recovered. This analysis tool is often ignored because it does not take into consideration the time value of money. The time value of money limitation of the payback period can be modified by using the discounted cash flows of a project for the analysis of when the outflows will be recovered. To make the most informed decision the IRRs and payback periods of the projects should be compared in conjunction with the NPVs of the two projects. The NPV analysis of the two projects under consideration indicates that the MMDC Project is the better of the two projects. 4. What additional information does Harris need to complete her analyses and compare the two projects? What specific questions should she ask each of the project sponsors? When comparing the two projects other than comparing the NPV and IRR of each project Harris will need to look at other factors as well. Among the factors that should be considered along with the NPV and IRR, are the manufacturing capabilities, the company’s core competencies, and ensuring that the project aligns with the company’s corporate strategy. With this being said the DYOD Project is at a disadvantage because the MMCD Project is already a successful operation which allows Harris to analyze the historical data as opposed to the project projections of DYOD. Using the factual data provided by MMCD is a less risky option for Harris to choose. In order to ensure that Harris is making the correct decision on which project to select she should ask the following question of each of the project sponsors: Is manufacturing children’s clothing part of the core competencies of New Heritage? Is your project aligned with the mission and long term strategies of the company? What are the differences in New Heritages current market and the doll market? How will scaling up production affect operating and overhead costs? What is the level of risk of the Design Your Own Doll project? Did they consider all hidden labor costs in the MMDC Line Expansion, which are similar to the extra labor costs in the DYOD project? Additionally, it would also be helpful if Harris had information about projects submitted by other departments to make sure that proposed production department projects are in-line with other department projects and an overall company strategy. Even though financially the MMDC Project is more compelling, maybe there is a good reason to pick the DYOD Project. For example, if one of the other divisions is submitting a complimentary project to the DYOD, maybe that would lower the overall risk of the DYOD Project and make it more appealing strategically. 5. If Harris is forced to recommend one project over the other, which should she recommend? Why? Since Harris can only promote one project during the capital budget meeting we would recommend that she support the MMDC Project. Of the two projects presented by her division it has the highest NPV. Financial Management authors Brigham and Ehrhardt state often ‘‘whenever conflicts exist between mutually exclusive projects, use the NPV method†. The NPV method tells us how much a project will add to the value of the company. This is a stated  goal of the New Heritage Doll Company. Also, this project would seem to further solidify relationships with strong customers and gain new ones by broadening the brand and leveraging existing infrastructure.

We need stronger climate leadership, to be sure, but instead of waiting for heroes to save us, maybe we can all help out and do some of the work ourselves? August 7, 2016 — It’s 2016, and we’ve known about climate change and the greenhouse effect for a very long time. And yet, despite decades of scientific research, reports, and warnings confirming the urgency of climate change, too many of our political leaders have done too little to actually solve the problem. Of course, there are some great exceptions: Governor Jerry Brown, former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, President Barack Obama, and Pope Francis have all done much to tackle climate change, often while facing strong opposition. But it’s not enough. Greenhouse gas levels continue to climb, the planet continues to warm, and we continue to wait for solutions. The world’s political leadership, on balance, has been too timid, too slow, and too disconnected from the science to adequately address climate change. Samantha Hufnagel REL317A Christian Ministry Professor Ruszala Research Paper due 5/7/15 The Life of Thomas Aquinas St. Thomas Aquinas, also known as â€Å"The Universal Teacher† or â€Å"The Christian Apostle†, was born into a wealthy aristocratic family in the kingdom of Naples at Rocca Secca in 1225 and died on March 7, 1274 at Fossa Nuova (Biography). He was born in Aquino, a town in Southern Italy from which Thomas Aquinas takes his surname. He was the youngest of eight siblings the son of Count Landulf of an old high born southern Italian family and his mother was Countess Theodora of Noble Norman Descent (Biography). Though Thomas s family members were descendants of Emperors Frederick I and Henry VI, they were still considered to be of lower nobility (Medieval Life). At the age of five, St. Thomas Aquinas was sent to the Abbey of Monte Cassino to train with Benedictine monks, where he remained until the age of thirteen. He was then forced to return to Naples due to the political climate. St. Thomas Aquinas spent the next five years completing his primary education at a Benedictine house in Naples. Thomas spent a great deal of time studying Aristotle s work, which later became a major â€Å"launching point† for Thomas s own exploration of philosophy. The quantitative analysis is based on two essential vectors: data collection and data analysis.   In terms of data collection, this activity will be aimed at gathering data that will help the marketing – related decisions of the company.   Data can be collected in any circumstances, on the street in interviews, through the Internet, on the phone or over the mail etc. On the other hand, this data needs to be interpreted and analyzed so as to provide the necessary reaction from the decision makers.   By interpretation, we will mean that the data will be statistically analyzed, trends and current tendencies will be estimated, all this with the use of different statistical measure and calculations. The literature review helped me to understand the specific concerns/stressors that nurses experience when caring for a dying patient. Peterson states that â€Å"common clinical stressors experienced by nurses are 1) watching a dying patient die, 2) the death of a patient, and 2) listening to or talking with a patient about their death imminent death† (Peterson, 2010). In the Nursing profession we are taught how to give holistic care and our main goals are to help our patients to feel and to get better. We tend to develop a bond with our patients and it is very stressful watching someone die, especially when we have that special bond. It is also hard listening and talking about the death. Being able to maintain professional distance while caring for the dying patients and their families, was another common concern among the participants (Peterson, 2010). The sampling method and sample size was identified in the study. A qualitative grounded theory approach was employed for two reasons. â€Å"The first was to gain an understanding of the concerns that the nurses had and to gain knowledge about their experiences in their own words. The second was to allow emotional dimension to be examined† (Peterson, 2010). Data collection strategies were clearly stated. The study used audiotape interviews and online open ended surveys. The nurses and nursing students were also examined for the amount of experience they had. There were 15 participates of which 8 were interviewed at a Midwestern university, and 7 were online. â€Å"Participants were asked to respond to two measures about death. The first was the multidimensional fear of death scale. The participants exhibited an average or healthy level of fear. The second measure was the Frommelt attitudes toward nursing care of the dying scale, which is show the attitude the participants had toward caring for dying patients. Only 9 completed the scale and all indicated a positive attitude toward caring for dying patients† (Peterson, 2010). A lot of nurses aren’t accustomed to caring for dying patients and thus have a fear due to lack of experience. Others may have a fear of not knowing how to respond and react to the dying patient. It appears that the participants were suitable for informing research and that the researcher followed the steps of the data analysis. This was a qualitative study of which interviews and surveys were appropriate. There were no indication that measures were taken to ensure autonomy, confidentiality and freedom of harm. The participants did sign an informed consent before they had an interview. I did not see where the researcher discusses anything about trustworthiness in the article, nor did I see anything about credibility, dependability, transferability and goodness discussed. The findings of this research study were clearly identified. The results were broken down into three sections and revealed that more education is needed on death and dying. It was found that communication can be a hindrance if there is a lack of education and trainings. In conclusion the article proved and showed the true stressors on Nurses that deal with dying patients on a daily basis. The study proved that communication challenges were the primary concerns among the participants. In order to help nurses cope more effectively in this situation, communication training programs are needed not only to benefit the nurses, but to provide the best care for their patients† (Peterson, 2010) The reference section clearly cited all resources that were used in the study. Examine how Shakespeare uses key features of language to create tension, drama and atmosphere in Act 1 scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet is a play set in a city called Verona in Italy, about two star crossed lovers, who fall in love at first sight, Unfortunately Romeo, is a member of the Montague family who are sworn enemies of the Capulet household, to which Juliet belongs. The path of true love is not going to be as straight as the two teenage lovers would wish for. It is a play with many twists and turns, not knowing what will be lurking around the next corner. Ignoring the fact that they should be enemies, they try to further their love for one another, embarking on a torturous path, Juliet had the heart rending decision of which road to take; the one laid out for her by her father, which appears to be straight forward, but not what she truly desires, to marry Paris who is eminently suitable. Alternatively, Juliet could take the path with Romeo, and disobey her parents, travelling a dangerous and twisted journey. The scene that I will be focusing on is Act 1 Scene 5, when the two destined lovers first lay eyes upon each other. They meet at a Capulet masked ball, where Romeo and his associates have turned up to, much to the fury of Juliets cousin Tybalt, Prince of Cats. Tybalt is well known in the city to find enjoyment in brawls. So, this spells out a torrid time to come for Romeo. However this is not the main aspect of this scene. This scene is very important for later events in the play because, here you really get the idea how much these two people want each other, and what they are willing to do get it. It also confirms the pure hatred Tybalt has for all Montagues, and now especially Romeo. Tybalts anger is shown towards the end of the scene when he makes a speech about Now seeming sweet convert to bitterest gall., which means What is good for now, will change into a curse. First of all, William Shakespeare is well known for his use of imagery when he was writing plays in the 15 and 1600s. Imagery was needed more so at that time than plays would do now, because there were not any proper sets, there would just be a curtain towards the back of the stage. So to create a setting he would need to do it using imagery through his script. He could do this by referring to things which were not there e.g. the moon, a valley, things in the distance. Shakespeare would tell the audience whether the setting was in the evening, morning or afternoon using this descriptive technique. In that period all of the actors were men they took both male and female roles, another reason why imagery was hugely important. The scene is started off with a group of servants, who are frantically trying to get everything sorted for the party, with the first servant (Peter) telling the others to do their jobs, and getting quite agitated over the whereabouts of fellow servant Potpan. You can see that Peter is getting more and more angry because, he is delivering short sharp orders to the staff and also almost everything he says is ended in either a question mark or an exclamation mark e.g. Wheres Potpan, that he helps not to take away? He shift a trencher? He scrape a trencher!. This translates into Wheres Potpan? Why isnt he helping us clear the table? He should be moving and scraping plates!. This shows great use of imagery, because it plants a rushed frantic display atmosphere in the audiences head even though they dont see any decoration. After the servants have left, Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet, Tybalt, Nurse and the guests enter. Lord Capulet performs a speech, which Shakespeare has used to set the scene brilliantly. He uses Lord Capulets character to set a happy relaxed, scene by making a joke at the beginning, about the women who refuse to dance obviously have corns on their feet, when he says Ladies that have their toes unplagud with corns will walk a bout with you.- Will now deny to dance?. After his introduction to the evening, with his unmistakably brilliant joke, Lord Capulet makes a point of there being a time when he could wear a mask and still charm a lady, and how that time is gone, and then he starts the music and eggs everyone on to dance especially the ladies, but tells his cousin to sit down for they are past their dancing days. This whole speech creates a relaxed welcoming mood for all of the guests. This is one way in which Shakespeare creates an atmosphere within the audience. Now we move onto, what I believe to be, one of the most important moments in the play. The first acquaintance (which the audience has been expecting, due to the Prologue) of the two inevitable lovebirds. Shakespeare again creates an atmosphere through the actors, however this time he uses Romeo to create a light romantic feel. He does this using small words and phrases, such as: she teaches torches to burn bright, she hangs upon the cheek of night (referring to her as a star), a rich jewel, a snowy dove. Some of the phrases used are metaphors. All of the metaphors and figurative language compare Juliets beauty to darkness, and how she outshines all light. Light to dark is a good comparison for they can mean many things, for instance: good to evil; right to wrong; joy to fear; rewards to consequences; life to death, the list is endless. This creates a great atmosphere all around the entire audience because, the metaphors used are really strong and meaningful. It also helps Shakespeare s need for imagery. It does this by having so many metaphors, it leaves the audience constantly comparing them in their mind, and this means that there would have been no need for any special lighting effects and such. Accidental Death Of an Anarchist EssayIf I were to be the director I would set this scene a lot like director Baz Luhrmann did in the 1996 modern interpretation of the play. I would set it in a grand ballroom with maybe a large band or orchestra playing, with drapes and party decorations everywhere, in the present day (so it can have relevance to a younger audience as well as an older one), and it would be a fancy dress party. I think that having the scene set as a fancy dress party is a great idea because, it is modern and relevant to the present day, also it would add a sense of humour to the play from the funny costumes, for instance, dressing Capulet up in a giant dog costume. It would be lit by bright lights, until the moment when Romeo and Juliet meet, where I would have them both under a red light each with everyone else continuing the party. The music at this point would be slow and romantic. The language would be kept to the original. Dressing Lord Capulet up in a giant do g costume, would be great because, as I mentioned, the comedy value, and also it would reflect his personality because, he does seem like the type of person who would enjoy a laugh and is very devoted to his family, but also has a side of him which will snap and bite. At the very beginning of the scene I would have the first servant Peter sat down cocktail in hand shouting out orders to the mad rushed servants. They could be running around with their arms full with plates and crash into each other, for comedy value. As soon as the Capulets and guests arrive Peter could fly up from out of his chair and run off looking busy. Setting this part of the scene like this would be good because, it has begun with the audience having a good laugh, warming them for Capulets speech. It is a good point to introduce some humour as there are not very many laugh out loud points in the play, and a performance needs to make the audience laugh to draw them in and make it appealing to a wider audience because as well as tragedy and tears, having the occasional chuckle, is what people want today in films and performances. Another issue to discuss is womens place in society in Elizabethan times. In the 1500s women had to rely on the men of the family to do everything. Even when it came to marriage the father chose who they had to marry. As Juliet was very young, she said that she had not given marriage too much thought. Juliets father, Lord Capulet, however had already been discussing his daughters wedding with Paris (act 1, scene 2). So because Juliet does not know a lot about life or especially marriage, why does she marry Romeo? Is it because she is naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve, courageous, foolhardy or does she really believe that Romeo is her true love? I do not believe that she is courageous for she only confronts her father once (even though that took a lot of bravery), she went behind his back which shows cunning but not courageousness in my opinion. She is definitely not foolhardy for she is fully aware of the consequences, her father has clearly told her the options she has, but she ignored them. I do not think that she really can know if Romeo is her true love or not, because she is still very young and has been shut off from the rest of the world all of her life. This leads me to the conclusion that she is naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve because she does not have much experience about life. I think having an arranged marriage is extremely selfish of the parents, it ignores what their son or daughter wants, and concentrates on what they will gain, which is mainly money, land, allies e.t.c. It would be difficult for a couple in those days to be completely independent because of families not liking the groom because he is not rich enough, or he has no noble heritage, so in some ways it is almost easier and better for the women to marry who they are told to, despite it not being what they really want. I would react by simply saying no. Of course today it would be seen as unacceptable to force two people into marriage, but at that time there were two choices; marry who was arranged for you or be disowned by all of your own family. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses many techniques with language to create tension or an atmosphere, for instance: he uses a Prologue to give the audience an idea of what is to come leaving them in continual suspense and anticipation; metaphors which can set a romantic scene e.g. Romeos speech includes lots of metaphors and creates an atmosphere within the audience; writing in sonnets which makes the performance roll and flow with a certain grace; dramatic irony, this is one of the most powerful aspects of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, it leaves the audience waiting for the moment in which they die. My personal view on the scene, is that it is one with twists and turns, leaving you guessing, keeping you on the edge of your seat thinking whats he going to do? how will he react?. Which is a masterpiece creation from Shakespeare. The rise and fall of tension throughout the scene, is the best uses of the key features of language, because it leaves the best impression on the audience, which is one minute happy and romantic e.g. the meeting of Romeo and Juliet, to Tybalt promising to kill Romeo, which creates a great atmosphere, because the audience knows from earlier in the play what Tybalt is really capable of.
